Last Saturday, our school had our Spring Formal. Periodically throughout the year our school has several dances. We have a Fall Formal, Homecoming, and a Spring Formal. We also have several informal dances in our Bistro...it's an old gym that is in Bede Hall...perfect for a smaller dance.
Student Government Association (SGA) puts on all of these dances, and we really have to commend them for always providing a fun atmosphere...the DJ, food, etc. is always really good, and everyone has a great time.
So, our Spring Formal this year was at Minerva's/Kelly Inn again. We had the same DJ we had for Homecoming (which I was not a fan of). It was a lot of the same music and kept on repeating songs. It was really nice to see everyone dressed up as this is the most formal of our dances. The baseball and softball games were cancelled for the day...so it was by far the best turnout I have ever seen at one of our dances.
We have two parking lots for students to park in on our campus...and usually on the weekends the big lot is always empty...and the small lot is half empty. This weekend, the small lot was full and the big lot was half ful.

Park Guide
I just found out I landed the best possible job for the summer. I am going to be a Park Guide for the National Park Service for the summer. Part of my job is to work in the Lewis and Clark Visitors Center...and the other half is giving presentations to campers on weekend evenings. I am really excited for such a good experience to put my two majors (history and secondary education) into practice and also to be making quite a lot of money!
For this job, I have to wear the park ranger uniform...hat and all! I start on May 19th, and I really can't wait! I was a little nervous at first that this job would interfer with a lot of my summer plans. I am invited to like seven weddings, but I plan on making it to three of them. My brother is getting married, my good friend from college, and my cousin are all getting married.
This job is something that will look really good on the resume. I hope to build a good relationship with the National Park Service and maybe continue on working for them in the summer. Since I am going to be a teacher, I will be looking for a job in the summer not only to keep busy but also to make some extra money since the teacher's salary isn't exactly great!

Final Projects
It's that time of year again. Many people automatically assume that the busiest times for college students are during mid-term week and finals week. I beg to differ (well, in my case anyways). Perhaps it is because my major is more in the humanities and away from the sciences, but I rarely have tests, just papers, projects, lesson plans, etc. So, right now, this week and the next, are by far the busiest for me...in fact, the busiest I have pry ever been in my academic career.
I taught a lesson in my methods class yesterday; that was our final project. So, I am done with that class for the rest of the year basically, and it feels nice to be accomplishing these things. I just gave a presentation an hour ago in my Wild West course...which was one of our last assignments; so, I'm basically done in that class as well.
For my social studies methods class tomorrow, I have to create a 10-15 minute lecture over the subject matter I have been studying this whole semester. I do that again next Friday...and after that, I am done with that class for the most part. A week from today I present my research paper from last year at the history conference at USD. That night I present my research project from this year to my Recent America class. So, as you can see, after next week, I will be about done with my classes...and finals week won't be bad for me at all!!

Student Teaching Part II
So, in a previous post, I talked about student teaching. Since I found out some great news lately regarding student teaching.
I found out a few days ago that I will be student teaching at Yankton Middle School in the fall. I will be teaching 8th grade history. My cooperating teacher is Mrs. Long, a teacher who has been there quite some time. I will begin student teaching about the same time that classes start here at MMC, and I end on December 5th!
I am very excited but also really nervous for this experience. My practicum that I completed this year has made me more confident, but I am still hesitant to become known as Miss Beacom instead of Lindsay. It is a scary thought for me to already be to this stage of my schooling; I can't believe I'm going to be a senior!
The student teaching experience is a bit different than most think it is. There is a lot of observing, leading into full-time teaching. It is a gradual change, starting with teaching one or two classes, to three or four, to five or six, to a full-day! I will teach full-time for two weeks, and then the student teaching experience tapers off a bit after that. Then in the Spring, I will make up like the last eighteen credits I need to finish and begin to look for a job! (scary thought...haha)

USD Conference
I was just notified that one of my research papers I completed last year was chosen to be presented at a history conference at USD. The paper I completed was called Women's War-Torn Profession: Female Journalism in the Vietnam War. I interviewed four prominent women journalists who were in Vietnam during the conflict. I interviewed them over the phone last year, and it really helped my paper having four great primary sources like that.
The conference is on April 24th, and I am already getting nervous to present the paper. I completed this last year for a class I was taking with Dr. Lofthus. I did not have it done...and done well enough in time for the conference last year, so we both decided it would be better to wait until this year to present it.
Each history major that attends Mount Marty College is supposed to present a paper at this conference. Each paper that is presented has someone else who is commenting on it. I commented on a paper my freshman year here at MMC. This conference is a good experience for both a presenter and a commenter. I feel like since I haven't really touched my paper a whole lot since this summer...since I have not done research with it in so long...that I will not be "on my game" that day as much as if I had presented last year.
Hopefully the audience in attendance enjoys what I have to say, and more importantly, what women reporters who covered the Vietnam War have to say.

Student Teaching
I am a junior education major, which means one thing...I will be student teaching in the fall. Yikes! I feel as though I am prepared for it, but I am still incredibly nervous for it. We will be finding out soon where we placed. At Mount Marty, students always do their student teaching in the fall...that way one begins the year with the students and also so we are not trying to find a job in the Spring as we are student teaching at the same time...could be crazy hectic and make life more stressful than it needs to be.
I asked to be placed in either Yankton Middle School, Crofton (Junior High and High School), or Gayville-Volin (Junior High and High School). Since I play volleyball, I will need to be relatively close to Yankton or in Yankton so I can make it back for practice and when the bus leaves for away games.
If I get placed in either Crofton or Gayville-Volin, I asked to be placed with a teacher who teaches 7-12. I would like to gain more experience with all of those age levels to better prepare me for the future. I also asked if it would be possible to do most of the day in a history classroom and a small part of the day in an English classroom, as I have an English minor and plan to become endorsed in both English and history. We will see soon how it all pans out!

Recent America
My favorite class that I am in right now is a history one called Recent America, 1932-present. It is a 300 level class...and we meet on Thursday nights from 6:30-9:30 p.m. I actually just got out of class. The class consists of one text we read on our own, and our professor, Dr. Lofthus, has created study guides for us to complete each week. We watch videos in class, explore music from the time period, and really generate some intriguing discussions. We also each have to interview someone from the time period, like a WWII Vet (which is what I did). We have a book review and also a huge research project we must all complete.
This year, my research project is a comparison of the welcoming home process and coping process of WWII Vets and Vietnam Vets. I am still working on it, and I hope to have a rough draft done soon. I've read a few books, done a lot of research, and have completed two interviews now. Last year, my paper was about women reporters in Vietnam, and I actually scored interviews with four prominent reporters who reported from Vietnam. So, I actually entered that paper into a history conference at USD.
Tonight, we had a guest speaker in this class (which is another reason why I enjoy the class...we have had a couple of guest speakers now). He brought history alive for me like I haven't experienced a whole lot before. He was a military man who was there when James Meredith was the first black man to attend Ole Miss...he saw it all happen. His stories tonight reassured me I want to be a history teacher...and have my own hand in history someday!

Clubs and Activities Part II
This post I will focus on a few more groups I am in, ASPIRE, Education Club, and College Democrats. ASPIRE stands for Active Students Participating in Responsible Education. It is actually an informal internship, as we do get paid to help out. We have meetings every Monday at noon, and we help the counselors, student health, and career center on our campus with promoting different programs they are putting on. We do everything from helping with depression screenings to making posters for the latest speaker to handing out flyers for alcohol awareness. ASPIRE keeps me very busy, but I like the different outlook it gives me on our campus.
I am the secretary of our Education Club, and this is one of my most active clubs that I am involved with. We have meetings monthly, and we put on programs such as Read Across America and the Girl Scout Bonanza. We have a very large membership, and I suppose that has something to do with the fact that we have so many education majors on our campus.
College Democrats was probably the first club that I signed up for. I am a very active Democrat, and I was quickly disappointed to find out that our College Democrats had about a 5 person membership when I arrived at Mount Marty College. My freshman year, we spent most of our time as a club recruiting more members. My sophomore year, I was the president of our College Democrats, and our membership grew to about 15 people (which was a very big accomplishment!). This year, I had to step down as president as I do not have the time during such a big political year as this one is to run our club. I am now the secretary, and our membership has grown even more. Maybe next year our club could grow to 30 people!!

Back From Break
For a four day week, it certainly has felt like the longest week of my life. It was so hard to come back from Easter break knowing we will not have even one day off until the end of the semester! I should have done so much homework over break, and I honestly did not do anything but finish a book! So, this week has been a bit stressful, but it is almost the weekend...so I will be able to breathe easy soon.
I had to write two papers (rough drafts) and create a presentation last night...I was up pretty late. Tonight, I have class until 9:30, and I have to write a mid-term essay and watch a video and write an essay about either class, gender, or race concerning the video. So, tonight will be a late night as well. One thing people quickly learn is that even if you do not procrastinate, late nights are a pretty common thing for college students. It is a tough thing to adjust to when coming to college. The course load increases, and I just feel like I have less and less time to complete everything. But, it is possible!
On Tuesday night, our floor (Bede 4) had a free pizza party. All of the floors in the girls' and guys' dorms were competing for it. It was to raise money for Darfur. It was a penny war as well as other activities, and our floor won! It was a great way to get people involved as well as do something for a good cause.

A Typical Day Part 2
So, in an earlier post, I described my typical day on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This post will be about my usual Tuesday and Thursday.
I love Tuesdays and Thursdays, because I can sleep in until 10 a.m. (if I don't have to get up early to finish homework I should have done the night before). I always wake up on Tuesdays and Thursdays in a good mood. Tuesdays are much better for me, though, because I only have one class, at 11 a.m. It is my Integrating Technology into the Classroom class with (almost Dr.) Mr. Shudak. He is a wonderful teacher, actually my favorite, and the class is much different than the classes I am used to taking. On both Tuesdays and Thursdays, I then head to lunch right after that class.
On Tuesdays, I do work-study from 1-3 p.m. and then head to practice from 3:45-6ish...then to supper afterwards. I do homework the rest of the night..while watching American Idol of course :).
Thursdays, however, are a different story. I have my Wild West in the 20th Century class with Dr. Foster from 1-4 p.m. I then head straight to practice, supper, and then a quick shower before my Recent America history course with Dr. Lofthus from 6:30-9:30 p.m. I then do homework the rest of the night. So, Thursdays are very busy for me, but the day usually goes so quickly...and I'm always ready for the weekend by the end of the night!

Clubs & Activities Part 1
One huge perk of attending a small school such as Mount Marty College is the ability to participate in as many activities as one wants to. I was pretty involved in high school, so I decided to stay active in as many clubs and activities as possible while attending college: ADMIT, Ambassadors, ASPIRE, Education Club, English Club, College Democrats, History Club, the Moderator, Collegians for Life, Campus Ministries, Prayer Partners, Agape, Intramurals, and as I already discussed, Lancer Volleyball.
This may seem like an insane amount of things to be involved with while also taking a full course load, playing a college sport, and doing work-study, but the people at MMC are so willing to be flexible and accomodate for students; they really allow students to spread their wings as much as they would like.
I will discuss two of my most time-consuming activities in this post. The first would be ADMIT club. ADMIT is actually my favorite club; it allows me to interract with prospective students. The main duty of the ADMIT club is to give tours and help with big group visit days as well. I love giving tours, and I have given many since I first began as a sophomore. Another activity I do is this...writing blogs for prospective students to read! Serving as an Ambassador also consumes a lot my time. Only juniors are allowed to be Ambassadors. We wear fancy suits and help serve at a variety of events at MMC. We learn about proper etiquette, and we keep pretty busy trying to represent the college.

A Typical Day
A typical day for me (Monday, Wednesday, & Friday anyways) begins at 8 a.m. I have my first class at 9 a.m., which is Jesus the Christ with Sr. Marielle Frigge. It is the last class I am taking to fulfill my RSP (religion) courses. It is a pretty tough course that is usually just meant for RSP majors, but with the extra help from Sr. Marielle, I'm doing just fine...I really enjoy the course. I then have a break at 10...which is usually filled with a nap or doing some last minute homework.
At 11 a.m., I have my Advanced Composition course with Dr. Jan Hausmann. I am getting my English minor, so this class is to help fulfill that minor. Not surprisingly, it is a class that mainly entails writing. We have journals every week as well as bigger essays...and also daily reading. I usually go to lunch then right after this class. I then spend the rest of my lunch break checking e-mails and relaxing until 1 p.m., which is when my next class begins.
At 1 p.m., I have my Middle School/Secondary Reading in the Content Areas course. Mary Miller teaches the class, and it consists of junior secondary education majors. We basically learn about many different teaching strategies and how to incorporate reading into the different content areas. I am a Secondary Education and History major...and this class is to help fulfill the Secondary Education major.
I then go to work-study from 2-3. I do work-study for the Faculty Secretary, Pam Schaefer. I do things like copying, faxing, doing the mail, typing, putting up bulletin boards, etc. Afterwards, I go to volleyball practice around 3:45-5:30 or 6...and then head to supper right after that. After supper, I spend the rest of my night doing homework! I'll explain what my Tuesdays and Thursdays consist of a later time.

MMC Volleyball
Volleyball in March? Yes, we are playing volleyball in March. When an athlete plays a sport in college, it is year-round. We started up with workouts and getting into shape right when we got back to school from Christmas break. We were doing things like lifting, plyos, running, etc. And now, since we have come back from spring break...we have been in the gym doing volleyball workouts. We only have one gym, and we have just about every main sport at MMC. So, it is always a struggle to get into the gym. Our basketball teams both just ended their seasons, so that meant we were able to get into the gym!
Friday is our first spring ball tournament. We will be traveling to Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA to play in the tournament. A couple of other schools will be there, too. We just play for a certain time limit, not really keeping score. This year, we have such a large spring ball team that we might even split up into two teams, which would be nice for all of our players to see a lot of playing time.
We will have two more tournaments and then our alumni game in the next month. Our alumni game will be a great one this year as we are having more alumni show up than any year I have been at the Mount. I can't believe it's my last season of spring ball. I'm really looking forward to our season in the fall; we have a lot of talent back. Also, we get to travel to San Diego for a tournament, and I can't wait for that!

Research Project
Since I am home on Spring Break, I thought I would actually get a break...boy, was I wrong. I have already explained that I am doing the rest of my student practicum right now, but I also have to do a massive amount of work on my research project. I am doing my research project on the coming home process and coping process of WWII Veterans...and I might compare them to Vietnam Veterans. I have not decided if I will do a comparison of the two, or if I will just do an analysis of WWII Veterans.
Anyways, tomorrow I'm leaving for Elgin, NE to interview Herman Starman, Kelly Starman's (Mount Marty College student) great uncle who is a WWII Veteran. I will interview him on Thursday actually, but it is quite a long commute from my home. So, I have a jam-packed week. It is nice to not have to totally worry about my classes right now, though.
I am missing all of my friends from school. As any college student would claim, college friends are some of the closest people in your life. We live together, go to school together, and hang out on the weekends together; we do everything together! So, to go from being with them 24/7...to not seeing them at all...that is quite the change! Anyways, I need to get back to these lesson plans for tomorrow.

Student Practicum
I'll explain the student practicum I had mentioned earlier. As a an junior education major, students at Mount Marty College are required to complete a student practicum. It entails being in the classroom all day with your cooperating teacher for ten days, and then during the last five days, you are supposed to teach one lesson a day. It is a good way to really get a feel for a whole day of school and all that a teacher actually does throughout the day.
I began my practicum experience over Christmas break. I did it in Bancroft-Rosalie junior high and high school. I observed two senior government classes, two junior american history courses, a sophomore civics class, and a seventh grade civics class. I did the first seven days of my practicum already, and the last three days I will do over Spring Break.
Mount Marty College's Education Department prepares their students so well that when I went out to do my practicum, my cooperating teacher was floored with how well I knew how to do lesson plans, etc. I actually ended up teaching two lessons on my second to last day and three on my last day! So, I have already taught five and plan on teaching two more when I go back (the two sections of the senior government class!). I am very excited to get back into the classroom all day; I miss it!
I began my practicum experience over Christmas break. I did it in Bancroft-Rosalie junior high and high school. I observed two senior government classes, two junior american history courses, a sophomore civics class, and a seventh grade civics class. Spring Break
I always feel like my professors get together and decide to assign everything the same week. I have never been so swamped with homework in my life. I am a Secondary Education and History major with an English minor (as well as a coaching endorsement). I am a junior; so, I am really getting into writing lesson plans and learning how to integrate different things into the classroom.
I also play volleyball here at Mount Marty. We just started up our spring season a few weeks ago, and so that has kept me pretty busy as well. Since Spring Break is next week, professors are trying to get in as much information as possible before the week long break. I think our professors are just as ready for a break as we are. And we had the most beautiful weather today in Yankton. I walked around without a coat on! This weather definitely gets everyone thinking about being outside instead of inside slaving away over school work.
My Spring Break will be a bit hectic. I will be finishing up my student practicum, interviewing a WWII Veteran as well as a Vietnam Veteran, and many other things. I will explain my practicum and why I'm interviewing war Veterans in a later post. I need to get back to homework!
