Clubs and Activities Part II

This post I will focus on a few more groups I am in, ASPIRE, Education Club, and College Democrats. ASPIRE stands for Active Students Participating in Responsible Education. It is actually an informal internship, as we do get paid to help out. We have meetings every Monday at noon, and we help the counselors, student health, and career center on our campus with promoting different programs they are putting on. We do everything from helping with depression screenings to making posters for the latest speaker to handing out flyers for alcohol awareness. ASPIRE keeps me very busy, but I like the different outlook it gives me on our campus.

I am the secretary of our Education Club, and this is one of my most active clubs that I am involved with. We have meetings monthly, and we put on programs such as Read Across America and the Girl Scout Bonanza. We have a very large membership, and I suppose that has something to do with the fact that we have so many education majors on our campus.

College Democrats was probably the first club that I signed up for. I am a very active Democrat, and I was quickly disappointed to find out that our College Democrats had about a 5 person membership when I arrived at Mount Marty College. My freshman year, we spent most of our time as a club recruiting more members. My sophomore year, I was the president of our College Democrats, and our membership grew to about 15 people (which was a very big accomplishment!). This year, I had to step down as president as I do not have the time during such a big political year as this one is to run our club. I am now the secretary, and our membership has grown even more. Maybe next year our club could grow to 30 people!!

Back From Break

For a four day week, it certainly has felt like the longest week of my life. It was so hard to come back from Easter break knowing we will not have even one day off until the end of the semester! I should have done so much homework over break, and I honestly did not do anything but finish a book! So, this week has been a bit stressful, but it is almost the weekend...so I will be able to breathe easy soon.

I had to write two papers (rough drafts) and create a presentation last night...I was up pretty late. Tonight, I have class until 9:30, and I have to write a mid-term essay and watch a video and write an essay about either class, gender, or race concerning the video. So, tonight will be a late night as well. One thing people quickly learn is that even if you do not procrastinate, late nights are a pretty common thing for college students. It is a tough thing to adjust to when coming to college. The course load increases, and I just feel like I have less and less time to complete everything. But, it is possible!

On Tuesday night, our floor (Bede 4) had a free pizza party. All of the floors in the girls' and guys' dorms were competing for it. It was to raise money for Darfur. It was a penny war as well as other activities, and our floor won! It was a great way to get people involved as well as do something for a good cause.

A Typical Day Part 2

So, in an earlier post, I described my typical day on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This post will be about my usual Tuesday and Thursday.

I love Tuesdays and Thursdays, because I can sleep in until 10 a.m. (if I don't have to get up early to finish homework I should have done the night before). I always wake up on Tuesdays and Thursdays in a good mood. Tuesdays are much better for me, though, because I only have one class, at 11 a.m. It is my Integrating Technology into the Classroom class with (almost Dr.) Mr. Shudak. He is a wonderful teacher, actually my favorite, and the class is much different than the classes I am used to taking. On both Tuesdays and Thursdays, I then head to lunch right after that class.

On Tuesdays, I do work-study from 1-3 p.m. and then head to practice from 3:45-6ish...then to supper afterwards. I do homework the rest of the night..while watching American Idol of course :).

Thursdays, however, are a different story. I have my Wild West in the 20th Century class with Dr. Foster from 1-4 p.m. I then head straight to practice, supper, and then a quick shower before my Recent America history course with Dr. Lofthus from 6:30-9:30 p.m. I then do homework the rest of the night. So, Thursdays are very busy for me, but the day usually goes so quickly...and I'm always ready for the weekend by the end of the night!

Clubs & Activities Part 1

One huge perk of attending a small school such as Mount Marty College is the ability to participate in as many activities as one wants to. I was pretty involved in high school, so I decided to stay active in as many clubs and activities as possible while attending college: ADMIT, Ambassadors, ASPIRE, Education Club, English Club, College Democrats, History Club, the Moderator, Collegians for Life, Campus Ministries, Prayer Partners, Agape, Intramurals, and as I already discussed, Lancer Volleyball.

This may seem like an insane amount of things to be involved with while also taking a full course load, playing a college sport, and doing work-study, but the people at MMC are so willing to be flexible and accomodate for students; they really allow students to spread their wings as much as they would like.

I will discuss two of my most time-consuming activities in this post. The first would be ADMIT club. ADMIT is actually my favorite club; it allows me to interract with prospective students. The main duty of the ADMIT club is to give tours and help with big group visit days as well. I love giving tours, and I have given many since I first began as a sophomore. Another activity I do is this...writing blogs for prospective students to read! Serving as an Ambassador also consumes a lot my time. Only juniors are allowed to be Ambassadors. We wear fancy suits and help serve at a variety of events at MMC. We learn about proper etiquette, and we keep pretty busy trying to represent the college.

A Typical Day

A typical day for me (Monday, Wednesday, & Friday anyways) begins at 8 a.m. I have my first class at 9 a.m., which is Jesus the Christ with Sr. Marielle Frigge. It is the last class I am taking to fulfill my RSP (religion) courses. It is a pretty tough course that is usually just meant for RSP majors, but with the extra help from Sr. Marielle, I'm doing just fine...I really enjoy the course. I then have a break at 10...which is usually filled with a nap or doing some last minute homework.

At 11 a.m., I have my Advanced Composition course with Dr. Jan Hausmann. I am getting my English minor, so this class is to help fulfill that minor. Not surprisingly, it is a class that mainly entails writing. We have journals every week as well as bigger essays...and also daily reading. I usually go to lunch then right after this class. I then spend the rest of my lunch break checking e-mails and relaxing until 1 p.m., which is when my next class begins.

At 1 p.m., I have my Middle School/Secondary Reading in the Content Areas course. Mary Miller teaches the class, and it consists of junior secondary education majors. We basically learn about many different teaching strategies and how to incorporate reading into the different content areas. I am a Secondary Education and History major...and this class is to help fulfill the Secondary Education major.

I then go to work-study from 2-3. I do work-study for the Faculty Secretary, Pam Schaefer. I do things like copying, faxing, doing the mail, typing, putting up bulletin boards, etc. Afterwards, I go to volleyball practice around 3:45-5:30 or 6...and then head to supper right after that. After supper, I spend the rest of my night doing homework! I'll explain what my Tuesdays and Thursdays consist of a later time.

MMC Volleyball

Volleyball in March? Yes, we are playing volleyball in March. When an athlete plays a sport in college, it is year-round. We started up with workouts and getting into shape right when we got back to school from Christmas break. We were doing things like lifting, plyos, running, etc. And now, since we have come back from spring break...we have been in the gym doing volleyball workouts. We only have one gym, and we have just about every main sport at MMC. So, it is always a struggle to get into the gym. Our basketball teams both just ended their seasons, so that meant we were able to get into the gym!

Friday is our first spring ball tournament. We will be traveling to Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA to play in the tournament. A couple of other schools will be there, too. We just play for a certain time limit, not really keeping score. This year, we have such a large spring ball team that we might even split up into two teams, which would be nice for all of our players to see a lot of playing time.

We will have two more tournaments and then our alumni game in the next month. Our alumni game will be a great one this year as we are having more alumni show up than any year I have been at the Mount. I can't believe it's my last season of spring ball. I'm really looking forward to our season in the fall; we have a lot of talent back. Also, we get to travel to San Diego for a tournament, and I can't wait for that!

Research Project

Since I am home on Spring Break, I thought I would actually get a break...boy, was I wrong. I have already explained that I am doing the rest of my student practicum right now, but I also have to do a massive amount of work on my research project. I am doing my research project on the coming home process and coping process of WWII Veterans...and I might compare them to Vietnam Veterans. I have not decided if I will do a comparison of the two, or if I will just do an analysis of WWII Veterans.

Anyways, tomorrow I'm leaving for Elgin, NE to interview Herman Starman, Kelly Starman's (Mount Marty College student) great uncle who is a WWII Veteran. I will interview him on Thursday actually, but it is quite a long commute from my home. So, I have a jam-packed week. It is nice to not have to totally worry about my classes right now, though.

I am missing all of my friends from school. As any college student would claim, college friends are some of the closest people in your life. We live together, go to school together, and hang out on the weekends together; we do everything together! So, to go from being with them 24/7...to not seeing them at all...that is quite the change! Anyways, I need to get back to these lesson plans for tomorrow.
